Day Two

Wrote through a Sunday afternoon family visit, TV droning in the corner, without anyone really noticing; they almost expect this sort of behavior from me now.

Part of a conversation with my father-in-law: “Working on your book? Old book, new book?” he asked.

By the time I looked up and said, yes, that one, he was fixing a lawn mower in the garage.

I’m going straight to hell, I swear.

My future father-in-law teaches English, so I’m mostly in the clear when it comes to my writerly (i.e., anti-social) behavior.

    Mostly.

I get a lot of lee way, at least.

In-laws are important. Getting along with them definitely makes things easier. You are way ahead of the game, it sounds like.

For a long time I never said anything to the new family about my writing. At some point the Wife mentioned a novel in the works. Their supportive comments have been a pleasant surprise. And that just may trace back to a legacy of civil relations between us.
