I see DWI

Haley Joel Osment, the wunderkind from the movie Sixth Sense faces some very unpleasant charges. Without ringing the apologist bell for a child star, his case suggests something more disturbing than legal problems.

Police arrested the It Boy of just a few session past, a competent actor who works regularly in decent pictures, after a car accident. Sounds like another child star gone bad so far, but there’s a twist. Haley was driving a 1995 Saturn.

This shocker might explain M. Night and Steven Spielberg’s enormous wealth. Their pictures make crazy bank, yet they pay the talent in crackerjacks and lollipops. An eleven year old Saturn? He might as well have been riding a Huffy. Note to his parents: Please get the I-see-dead-people kid a real paycheck and a car from this century. And fire his agent.

I completely disagree, and not just because I am a Saturn owner. Teenage boys are terrible drivers – as evidenced by the accident. Teenagers should absolutely not have anything fancy to drive, no matter how much money they have in their trust funds.

To me, it reeks of parents reigning in their teenage star son. And perhaps saving the money for later in life when chances are good he’ll need it! Life is not always kind for grown up child stars. To his parents, I say, “Well done!”

…except I just clicked on the link and saw that he was driving under the influence, AND had pot with him. (I guess I missed the “I see DWI” title). So yeah, forget what I said about good parenting – except I still think it’s a good idea to let your 18 year old drive a beater.

Pollster, glad you surrvived the heat snap out your way this summer. Hopefully temperatures like that do not return in our lifetime.

I can see your point: Haley’s parents helped him save money. Realizing that teenagers are bad drivers, they set him up with a modest used car. This may have been an attempt to set reasonable expectations for him, given the fact that so many child stars never transist to working adult actors.

Still, I think that he earned enough for a more elegant ride than an 11 year old Saturn. Like a 2006 Civic or Accord, for instance. Very modest compared with the crowd he runs with, yet functional, dependable, and from this century.
